Our first Informational Tour of the season took us to Little City in Palatine where we visited their two on-campus adult residential options.
The Community Living Facility (CLF) is a dorm-like residence in which individuals share a community kitchen, living area and dining room. Some units within the CLF have a separate bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom while others are studios with a shared bath. The two CLFs house 16 residents each with 24/7 support from 2-4 staffers per building. The CLF is considered a transitional setting where individuals build skills in the areas of personal grooming and hygiene, cooking, budgeting, community integration, and vocational development. All of these activities are designed to prepare individuals for more independent living.
In the Supported Living Arrangement (SLA), adults live in 1-bedroom apartments; some are intermittent CILAs and others are private pay with HUD subsidies. Residents in this program are mostly independent although support is available to help with budgeting skills, grocery shopping or exploring work options. The ultimate goal for people in the SLA is to acquire the skills that enable them to live as independently as possible.
In addition to these on-campus options, Little City also operates 16 CILA homes in the community. In total, Little City serves over 150 adults in residential settings.
Thank you to Jason Clark for arranging and facilitating this tour (along with Lori and Ola). For more information regarding Little City residential options, contact Jason at JClark@littlecity.org.
