Ann Sickon and Jackie Eddy from Center for Independent Futures were the featured speakers at our November Friday Forum discussing their New Futures Initiative: The Path to Community Living Options™. Located in Evanston, Center for Independent Futures strives to create innovative ways to support individuals with disabilities so that they can live full and meaningful lives.
The New Futures Initiative™ is designed to help families open the door to community-based, supported living options within their own neighborhoods. The year-long proprietary process takes families through a series of four workshops that provide a step-by-step guide toward creating the housing solutions that their loved ones need and deserve. Some of the topics discussed during the workshops include creating a shared vision for the residence, determining the ownership model, identifying the support needs and establishing a budget.
As an example, Ann and Jackie talked about several Community Living Option™ residences (house, apartment and condo) currently supported by the Center for Independent Futures. They also led attendees in an asset-mapping activity which highlighted what skills and interests families can bring to the table to benefit the home.
