Rachel Weisberg, Staff Attorney and Illinois ADA Project Manager from Equip for Equality was the featured speaker at our February Friday Forum. Equip for Equality is an independent agency whose primary goal is to protect the human & civil rights of people with disabilities in Illinois. 

Rachel’s presentation focused on Transition and Employment Rights and covered the state and federal laws that protect against employment discrimination including The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Illinois Human Rights Act of 1979, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. These laws protect qualified applicants and employees with disabilities and provide for reasonable accommodations. Some examples of reasonable accommodation may be replacing a written test or application with an in-person interview, allowing for a job coach or providing accessible parking. Rachel discussed the process for requesting a reasonable accommodation, the concepts of disclosure and confidentiality, and restrictions on medical exams/inquiries. She also touched on disability discrimination and ADA accommodations in a college setting.
